Remember your firearm safety training and help others understand our sport!
Nestled in the base of a coulee the Lethbridge Fish and Game Range has provided very safe shooting experiences for over 1200 members with 600 trained Range Officers who supervise our shooting activities for decades. We know there has never been a serious injury to any participant, spectator or other person resulting from shooting sports activities at the range. Yet, this range is going to be closed for a period while City Council deliberates safety concerns. During this time many of you will continue to practice at informal ranges on acrages and farms in the surrounding areas with out all of our safety measures such as the target backstops, the huge coulee backstop, the fences, video cameras and security gate. It is going to be very important to make sure that you remember the training that you have received in order to own a firearm and participate in the shooting sports at our range.
We understand other sports like car racing, baseball, football, golf, hockey, soccer etc. have histories filled with injuries and fatalities to players and spectators. You must remember that the shooting sports are irrationally considered to be dangerous and you are an ambassador for our sport. You can remind people that the certification of anyone owning a firearm will still be required even after the long gun registry is history. We hope the government can use the money saved from the registry to do something about the underlying causes of violent behaviours; some of which are learned and even encouraged in popular professional sports. Please remind people that In the sport shooting community we have zero tolerence for any hint of violent behaviour and a person's right to own firearms may be terminated if there is any reason to suspect any form of violence. It is a very safe sport.
We want you to remember all of your training and remember the importance of backstops to catch bullets. Locations like our range with target backstops as well as the huge coulee backstop may not be available so we want to make sure that you remember to focus on what is behind your target. A brochure that was produced by Southern Alberta Firearm Education Society which is one of our affiliated organizations provides some really good information and we encourage you to download it and forward it to people who are not involved in our organization to help remind them about safe shooting practices.
