These Range Operating Instructions cover the use of the range facility operated by the Lethbridge Fish and Game Association.

All Range Officers and range users are required to read and familiarize themselves with these Range Operating Instructions.

SECTION 1 - GENERAL

These Range Operating Instructions cover the use of the range facility operated by the Lethbridge Fish and Game Association.

All Range Officers and range users are required to read and familiarize themselves with these Range Operating Instructions.

Requests for exemptions from any provisions of these Range Operating Instructions must be approved in advance by the Range Operator (LFG Range Chairman or Chairmen).

SECTION 2 - RANGE FACILITY

Range Descriptions The range compound has multiple ranges.  The description of the operational ranges are listed below:

  • Range 1 - Archery
  • Range 2 - 10 position, 400yards center-fire (big-bore) rifle range
  • Range 3 - 7 position, Handgun / .22 calibre rifle range
  • Range 4 - 7 position, 100m handgun / .22 calibre rifle range
  • Range 5 - 10 position, 25m handgun range
  • Range 6 - Skeet shotgun range and 5 position trap shotgun range

The normal equipment used at each range is indicated in the following descriptions.  On an exception basis (such as 3 gun matches, IPSC matches, Cowboy Action matches, police or security agency use) the use of other equipment may be allowed with the prior approval of the range operator.

SECTION 3 - PERSONNEL

Range Officer

Range Officers will be those individuals recognized by the range operator(s) as having sufficient experience and knowledge or those who hold valid Range Officer certification from a recognized agency.  Lethbridge Fish and Game Association recognizes RO qualifications from the following agencies or groups:

  • IPSC
  • RCMP Range Master Course
  • AFSS Range Safety Officer
  • Canadian Armed Forces Range Safety Officer training
  • Fish and Wildlife Range Officer Training
  • Or any other individual whose qualifications are deemed acceptable by the Range Operator(s)

Range Officers have the responsibility to supervise all personnel (shooters and non-shooters alike) on the property and may have members/non-members removed at his/her discretion.

If more than one range officer is on the same range at the same time, the acting range officer will typically be the person who was on the range first.

Guests and Spectators

Guests or pets are the responsibility of the Lethbridge Fish and Game Association member who they came with and must remain under adult control at all times.

Dogs must be on leash or kept in the vehicle at all times.

Spectators are the responsibility of the Range Officer, he/she must take personal responsibility for them or delegate that responsibility to someone else, preferably a Lethbridge Fish and Game Association member.

SECTION 4 - RANGE OPERATIONS

Targets

Only use Lethbridge Fish and Game Association approved targets (see Range Descriptions). At no time can glass, pop cans or similar targets be used on the range facility.

Range Use Card

All restricted firearm users will have access to a Range Use Card.  Complete the Range Use Card as requested and deposit it in the slot in the receptacle located in the door slot on the trailer at the range entrance. Please retain one copy for your records.  This information will only be used to assist you in retaining your status as an active user of restricted firearms.

Firearm Safety Areas

Firearm Safety areas will be established, as required to ensure safe practices, by the acting Range Officer or the Range Officer as dictated by the specific shooting circumstances.

Ammunition

  • All spent cartridge cases or shotshell hulls must be collected and disposed of in containers provided or removed from the range. 
  • The use of tracer, incendiary, explosive or similar ammunition is prohibited.
  • Only authorized types of ammunition may be used on any range (See Range Descriptions)
  • Explosives The detonation of explosive devices is prohibited on the range property.
  • Live ammunition is prohibited in firearm safety areas.

Garbage

Burning of garbage is prohibited. All garbage is to be collected, bagged and taken to the garbage bin located at the main gate or otherwise removed from the range property

Handguns

All handguns must be unloaded, holstered or cased except while on an active firing line or while in the firearm safety area.

Loaded Firearms

Loaded firearms are allowed only at an active firing line.  Do not move or transport loaded firearms between ranges, vehicles or firearm safety areas.

Match Completion

At the conclusion of all matches or practices the Range Officer will ensure that:

  • All target frames are returned to the storage shed
  • firing points are policed for brass and other debris
  • all flags are lowered or lights turned off;
  • and buildings and entrance gates are locked.

SECTION 5 - RANGE SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

Spectators

Spectators will follow all directions given to them by the Range Officer.  Spectators must remain a safe distance behind any active firing line.

Hearing and Eye Protection

Hearing protection for shooters and range staff in near proximity to an active firing line is mandatory.

Alcohol/Drugs

Consumption of alcohol or drugs on range premises is prohibited.  Any person deemed by the Range Officer to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be permitted to shoot.

Range Safety Rules

  1. Only enter the range via the entrance door to the covered firing line. (Do not enter around sides of buildings).
  2. Raise the flag (range 2) or ensure the red light is on while the range is active
  3. Use approved targets only (See Range Descriptions)
  4. Use approved firearms and ammunition only (See Range Descriptions)
  5. Maintain a minimum 50 meter distance from the target when shooting at steel reactive targets with high-power centre-fire rifles. Maintain a minimum 10 meter from the target when shooting at steel reactive targets with centre-fire handgun, .22 rifle and low velocity centre-fire rifle.
  6. No firing before 8 AM and no firing after sunset or normal closing hours (whichever is earlier)
  7. No firing if target visibility is reduced as determined by the Range Officer
  8. Loaded firearms shall never be left unattended
  9. Unattended firearms shall be unloaded with the action left open (preferably with an open bolt indicator placed in the action) or with the bolt removed. Handguns shall be unloaded with the action left open or unloaded in the holster with the hammer down and the magazine removed.
  10. When shooters are down-range, do not handle your firearms at the firing line for any reason. No one is allowed down-range until the range is in cease-fire status. Cease-fire status is only acceptable when people are no longer handling their firearms (including cleaning their firearms). While people are cleaning their firearms on the line, the range is still active and no one is allowed down-range.
